Poland Cold Chain Logistics Market Analysis

The Polish Cold Chain Logistics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 5% during the forecast period. Poland is a significant producer of agri-food products in the world and in Europe.

As Central Europe’s second-largest country, Poland is a hugely attractive market for all types of food professionals creating a huge scope for the development of the cold chain logistics sector. The two major transport corridors linking the country to Northern Europe and Central Asia makes it the regional food hub, reaching beyond the European Union and into the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. The favourable location of the country allows it the full accessibility to well-serviced road, air and rail links.

Food exports are vital to Poland’s multi-billion dollar economy. Poland’s exporters are on a continuous lookout for excellent cold chain logistics services in terms of reefer trucks, chiller equipment and warehousing facilities.

COVID-19 has not stopped Polish exporters. Despite a truly large scale of disturbances in the global economy, they have been doing extremely good. Poland was the fourth supplier of goods to Germany in general and the second in Europe. In 2020 exports of goods increased at a two-digit rate of 10%, reaching 237.5 billion euros, on the imports side, there was a decrease of 4.8% in 2020 to 225.5 billion euros.

Polish logistics market has been developing dynamically for several years. The development of road infrastructure has made road transport much easier. Thanks to the expansion of new container terminals, Gdynia Container Terminal and Deepwater Container Terminal in Gdansk, Poland's role in the flow of containers is increasing. It is worth paying attention to the many investments related to the increase in warehouse and office space. Rail transport is growing significantly, PKP Cargo has become the second largest rail carrier in the European Union. The growth prospects for the logistics market in Poland are therefore promising. Compared to other European Union countries, Poland has one of the longest networks in Europe.

Poland Cold Chain Logistics Market Trends

This section covers the major market trends shaping the Poland Cold Chain Logistics Market according to our research experts:

Poland’s Foreign Trade in Agri-Food Products:

Poland gained free access to a large and developed European market, which is one of the most demanding agri-food markets in the world. Export has become an important channel for managing food surplus, and thus it constitutes an important source of revenue for the national food industry. The share of exports of agri-food products in Polish exports in 2020 worth 16% and imports worth 10.2%, in 2019 exports worth 15.4% and imports worth 9.4%, 2018 worth 13.3%, and imports is 8.7%. Another measure of the importance of providing a food economy is also a proportion of the export value in the production value, which for the agri-food sector in 2020 amounted above 45%. Foreign trade in agri-food products is of great importance in the trade balance of Poland.

Exporting agri-food products has become an effective distribution outlet for production surpluses, as well as a key factor in stabilizing domestic agricultural and food markets. As a result, the economic situation in several sectors of Poland's agriculture and food industry has improved. Poland's nearly 15 years of participation in European Union institutions have had a positive effect on the growth of agri-food trade. The very positive outcomes of international trade in food products attest to this. Over the course of Poland's EU membership, the value of agri-food exports has increased more than fivefold, to nearly EUR 35 billion, while imports have increased fourfold, to nearly EUR 24 billion, and the trade balance has increased elevenfold, to EUR 10.6 billion in 2020.

Growth of Perishable Goods in Logistics Market:

Polish feed consumption is heavily influenced by meat demand, which accounts for most price fluctuations. In terms of volume, meat production and consumption have remained constant, resulting in stable feed demand. The COVID-19 pandemic has had only a minor impact on the milk production process; milk production takes place in areas with low population density and can be done without direct interaction between farmers and drivers. The increase in milk production was followed by a continued high level of purchases, resulting in prices remaining unchanged from the year 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a positive effect on dairy product consumption in Poland, with a rise in demand for drinking milk and hard cheese. There was a substantial rise in demand for some fresh vegetables, onions, and potatoes at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, motivated by the same factors driving massive purchases of perishable goods. High domestic demand was maintained, but lower export levels were a result of a poor harvest in 2019.
