US Retail 3PL Market Analysis

United States Retail 3PL Market is expected to hit a projected market size of USD XXX billion by 2026, representing a XX percent CAGR from 2021 to 2026. From USD 3.78 trillion in 2019, total retail sales climbed 6.9% to USD 4.04 trillion in 2020. Given the negative impact of the coronavirus epidemic on in-store buying, the significant increase in total retail sales may come as a surprise. However, digital sales accounted for the majority of retail growth. In 2020, e-commerce accounted for over three-quarters of all retail growth (74.6 percent), the greatest share of overall growth the online sector has ever had. Offline sales—which include stores, catalogs, and call centers—grew 2.1% in 2020, which was the same rate as the pandemic-free prior year.

The U.S. is on pace to see 87 million square feet of retail space impacted by closures—which would be the least amount of space impacted by closures since 2016 and nearly half the totals seen in 2020. With the US being considered as one of the world’s biggest economies, the American apparel market is by far the largest in the world. It is 50% bigger than China’s retail segment. In fact, the top global retail companies are largely American. The first five months of 2021 saw a 17.6% increase in retail sales over the same period in 2020. Retail sales are up 20.8 percent in comparison to the same period last year. It's not simply ecommerce that will drive growth in 2021. When non-store sales, such as online, are excluded, year-to-date sales in 2021 are about 17 percent higher than in 2020. Not only are small internet businesses rising, but the number of storefronts in the United States reached an all-time high in Q4 2020. There were 1,049,151 retail businesses in the United States in Q4 2020, up 4,671 from Q3 2020.

US Retail 3PL Market Trends

This section covers the major market trends shaping the US Retail 3PL Market according to our research experts:

GROWTH IN E-COMMERCE DRIVING THE MARKET:

According to US Department of Commerce estimates, consumers spent USD 791.70 billion online with US businesses in 2020, rising 32.4 percent year over year. This is the highest yearly e-commerce growth in the United States in at least two decades. It's also more than double the 15.1 percent increase from the previous year. The percentage of total retail sales spent online has been gradually increasing, with e-commerce penetration expected to reach 19.6% by 2020. This is an increase from 15.8% in 2019 and 14.3% in 2018. By far the largest year-over-year increase in U.S. retail sales ever recorded is the over four-percentage-point increase in e-commerce penetration. No previous year has seen a two-percentage-point increase in digital adoption. Increases in online purchasing as a result of COVID-19 resulted in an additional USD 105.47 billion in e-commerce income in 2020.

Amazon represented more than a third or 38.3% of all e-commerce spending in 2020, increasing its market share from 35.8% the prior year. The online retailer accounted for nearly half—or 45.8%—of all U.S. online sales growth, which is up slightly from 43.8% in 2019. But other big competitors made gains in 2020, too. Amazon for years (even decades) has alone accounted for much of the gains in U.S. online retail. In 2020, however, it’s clear that the pandemic pushed many more consumers online—and they didn’t all shop on Amazon. At least some shopped on other large online retail sites such as Walmart Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc., Target Corp. and Kroger Co.—all top 20 retailers in last year’s rankings—on track to grow online sales more than 60% in fiscal 2020.

United States Retail 3PL Market trends

INCREASE IN RETAIL IMPORTS:

Strong retail sales as COVID-infected Americans return to stores. The lifting of 19 limitations is continuing to fuel record import numbers and contribute to record volumes at America's busiest container ports. According to the National Retail Federation, sales volumes in 2021 are on course to achieve new highs. The retail trade association, on the other hand, points to ongoing supply chain interruptions as a possible source of difficulty as retailers prepare for the crucial fall and holiday season sales seasons. As transportation capacity struggles, supply chains are finding it difficult to keep up with demand. The entire volume for the first half of 2021 was up 35.6 percent year over year, and the total volume for 2021 is expected to be 25.9 million TEU, up 17.5 percent year over year.

Imports climbed 22.1 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period last year, and each month will set a new record for import volumes for respective months, according to US retailers. Total US imports from Asia increased 14.5 percent in the latter six months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, owing to a 22.5 percent increase in volume handled by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Imports from Asia into the United States increased 16.9% in the second half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Import volumes are expected to remain high in the coming months of 2021, both in real terms and when compared to the same months last year, when retailers were just getting back on their feet after the US economy was shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak.
