Rice Price Trends
Increasing imports in China creating pressure on domestic prices
China is projected to import 4.75 million metric ton of rice in 2021. The major exporters to China including Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Thailand are all expected to increase their exports to China, but significantly, India is expected to be a major exporter to China. Indian rice’s increased presence in the Chinese market is on account of its competitive prices for broken rice, which constitute over 1 million metric ton of the import. The surge in imports is expected to soften domestic prices of rice in China, with millers and exporters in the country holding significant stocks of rice from the previous season.

Supply adequacy to sustain current prices
More than 80% of India’s rice crop is grown in the kharif season (June-September). The country’s nodal grain procurement agency, the Food Corporation of India (FCI), already has more than adequate supply of rice to meet the demands of the country’s Public Distribution System (PDS), with stocks of 32 million metric ton against the buffer norm of 13.58 million metric ton. This is expected to provide sufficient room for increased export business, leading to stability in prices for the year 2022.

India is expected to be a major exporter to China. Indian rice’s increased presence in the Chinese market is on account of its competitive prices for broken rice, which constitute over 1 million metric ton of the import.
